• Quit any program running on your Appletalk network (including ARA).
• Restart or Shut Down remote Macs. You must have a copy of Quitter running on these Macs.
• Quit the Finder of the local Mac.
• Quit background apps
• Register and get Quitter Daemon! (See below)
Why do I want Quitter?
• Network administrators will find it especially useful, for quitting server programs remotely. For example, if you run a Web Server, and wish to copy over a new version of a CGI, you must quit the running CGI first. Otherwise the Finder won't let you copy it over. This program allows you to quit the program across the network, so that you can copy over the new version, without having to go to the server. Then, the Web server will start up the new version the next time a user accesses that CGI program.
• Putting Quitter and your server programs in the startup items folder is a good idea. You can then use Quitter to restart the server, and your apps will all come online again. Quitter will be loaded up, so you'll be able to restart the Mac remotely again if you want to. (Quitter Daemon is better suited for this. Quitter Daemon goes in the extensions folder.)
• I'm afraid to say this, but this is also a great practical joke. (Especially since version 1.4.0: Just hold down the control key when you use any of Quitter's features, and you will only see applications that have Guest access enabled.)
• Note: "Apparent Success" is reported if Quitter thinks everything went ok. A potential problem could be if a dialog box came up on the remote machine, preventing the action from completing. This could happen if a file is open with unsaved changes. Try the action again, and see if the program is still running or the computer is still in the list, to verify if the action worked.
Register and Receive: "Quitter Daemon", a Background-Only version of Quitter.
Put Quitter Daemon into the extensions folder, and users won't unknowingly quit Quitter, because they won't even know it's running. This Background-Only version takes up about 30k of ram! This is ideal for lab machines and servers. You will receive Quitter Daemon with your shareware payment.

• Quitter has so been tested on MacOS 7.1 through MacOS 8.0.
How do I set it up?
• You need an Appletalk network.
• Turn Program Linking on in the Sharing Setup control panel, on the remote computers.
• Give Program Linking access to yourself in the Users & Groups control panel, on the remote computers. You can give access to anyone else, but remember, this allows them to quit programs running on your Mac, and use other programs that support Program Linking. You can even turn Program Linking on for Guests, but this may be a poor security decision. Guest Program Linking means you won't have to bother with a Password when you are using Quitter, which makes it easier. Only if no one else has Appletalk access to your network, guest access is the best choice.
• You may need to turn Program Linking on for individual programs. Click on the program and select "Sharing..." in the File menu, and check off Program Linking. Turn OFF Program linking in the same way, to prevent users from linking to programs you don't want them to be able to access.

What's new in 1.5.1?
• Quitter and Quitter Daemon are finally PowerPC native (Distributed FAT). I promise, you won't notice a difference.
• Quitter Daemon is now an Application Extension (appe). An 'appe' is like an 'init', because it goes in your extensions folder. However, it patches no traps, and can not conflict with other extensions. This is Apple's new standard for writing extensions and background applications. The advantage is that it's even more hidden from the user. The disadvantage is that you can not launch Quitter Daemon manually. it must be in the extensions folder at start up.
• Supports Mac OS 8's "reopen application" event. If you double click Quitter in the Finder, and Quitter is already running, quitter will beep. Not excited? Well it only works in Mac OS 8, so now I can say Quitter is MacOS 8 savvy!

What's new in 1.2?
• Quitter can restart or shut down any Mac on your Appletalk network! Another copy of Quitter must be running on that Mac. You must have a copy of Quitter running on that Mac. When it restarts, be sure to have Quitter in the Startup folder if you plan on doing this again. If there are any running apps that have unsaved files, they will ask if you want to save them. If File Sharing is on, it will ask how many minutes you want to wait. So your mac will not be restarted until these items are taken care of.
You may redistribute Quitter, as long as Quitter is not modified or charged for in any way. If you wish to include this version of Quitter on a CD-ROM or other media, all I ask for is a copy. All redistributions MUST include this file. BBS distribution is encouraged.
